Value of South African and ZAR Coins

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to old coins. I had many people asking me about their old coin collection. When they send me images 90% of the time the coins would be from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Coins in this era usually don’t have much value. Coins that do have little value in this time period is the 1965 Afrikaans 1c (Around R4000 to R5000 or $300), for a 1959 Crown or 5 Shillings you can get up to R10 000 ($650) and if it is highly graded by NGC up to R35 000 ($2300) Lets look at the Value of South African and ZAR Coins.

There are not many coins with value in South Africa, but a few does have value and the prices are astronomical. The 1931 Tickey also know as a 3d or Three Pence has the most value of any coin in South Africa. A good quality tickey or Three Pence coin (Coins are rated from 0 – 70 and we will discuss this in another article) can have a value of around R200 000 ($13 300). If the grade is MS68 to MS 70 that are unheard of you can easily sell it for around a R1000 000 ($66 500)

What Coins were used in South Africa before now

  • Dutch Cartwheel 1652 – 1830
  • British Pennies 1831 – 1891
  • ZAR Coins 1892 – 1899
  • Union Coins 1910 – 1923
  • King George V first coinage 1923 – 1925
  • King George V second coinage 1925 – 1930
  • King George V third coinage 1931 – 1936
  • King George VI first coinage 1937 – 1947
  • King George VI second coinage 1948 – 1950
  • King George VI third coinage 1951 – 1952
  • Queen Elizabeth II coinage 1953 – 1960
  • First Decimal 1961 – 1964
  • Second Decimal 1965 – 1990
  • Third Decimal 1989 to date

How the value of coins can be deceivable

We already discussed the value of the 1931 Tickey and yes it’s rare, but the 1931 Farthing or Quarter penny (It has to be Suid Afrika and not Zuid Afrika) is even more scares than the 1931 Tickey considering they only made 62 proof coins apposed to the 1931 Tickey from which they made 128 in circulation and 62 proof coins. This being said, a 1931 Suid Afrika Farthing will only be valued at around (depending at the grade) R800 ($53)

The confusion is still big when it come to the Mandela Coins Value

A commemorative Mandela five rand coin is not worth more than its face value – unless it’s a proof coin and still in a capsule. But coin shops are still inundated with queries from holders who believe they may have struck it big.

The SARB issues commemorative circulation coins as part of its currency production function. These coins are issued to commemorate a person or an event that has had a significant impact on society. Such coins are always produced in large quantities and are made available and accessible to the public at face value.

For example, the commemorative R5 Nelson Mandela circulation coin that was issued in 2008 to celebrate the former president’s 90th birthday was and is still worth R5. There could be a buyer willing to pay a higher price to collect such a commemorative circulation coin but the SARB does not attach a value higher than the face value to such coins.

The MS69 Nelson Mandela 2008 90th Birthday coin is the best known uncirculated coin. This coin was sold for R2. 5 million

ZAR Coins Value

Zar coins(1892 – 1898) in general has a value from R200 ($13) to R400 ($26)

Depending on the grade of your coin the value can increase tremendously from a R400 ($26) to a R100 000 ($6500) coin. Coins can get graded at NGC.
